The Nagasaki Kunchi Festival is one of the biggest festivals in Nagasaki! This festival first started in 1634 as a celebration and offering to the gods at Suwa Shrine, and now this festival has over 380 years of history and tradition.
The festival is from October 7th to 9th annually, and it attracts both domestic and international tourists. Each year, five to seven performing districts called “Odori-cho” will perform at four main venues in Nagasaki City. Each “Odori-cho” performs once every seven years, so the performances remain fresh even to the locals! This year, some of the highly anticipated performances include the Dragon Dance, and the Dutch Ship Performance!
Nagasaki was the only port open to foreign trade in Japan during the isolation period (1600-1800). As a result, some of the performances that can be seen at the Nagasaki Kunchi Festival have received influences from China, the Netherlands and Portugal (countries that Japan had diplomatic relations with during the 1600-1800).
If you don’t have tickets to the paid seating area, you can also watch the performances at places like Nagasaki Station, Minato Park, and Hamanomachi Arcade. In addition, the Odori-Cho groups will perform and visit the local businesses, shops and communities during the three days as well.
