On August 15th, a special event called “Shoronagashi” (also known as the “Spirit Boat Procession”) will be held in Nagasaki City. If you’re in town during this time, be sure to head out to the streets and get a peek of this rare and unique event; only in Nagasaki Prefecture! The purpose of “Shoronagashi” is to honour the spirits of ancestors, and to send off the spirit of the recently deceased family member; and it is rather a lively event! Each district will build and decorate a large wooden boat (also known as a "spirit boat") prior to August 15th. Traditionally, the boats were pushed into the ocean as a way of “seeing off” or “sending off” the spirits. Now, the spirit boats are taken to the Ohato area for proper disposal. **Note: Please be aware that firecrackers will be thrown onto the streets when the spirit boats are passing by, so please be careful during this time! The Shoronagashi Event usually starts around 5pm on August 15th.
